The 19th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) is a regional conference that happens biennially in Africa. ICASA was held in Cote d’Ivoire in Abidjan, with the theme: “ENDING AIDS-DELIVERING DIFFERENTLY”, 4-9 December, 2017.
As the International community, all Africans joined hands in re-committing their efforts to achieving an AIDS free Africa. The conference was an opportunity to renew the global commitment by drawing the world’s attention to the fact that any gains is now under threat due to the global economic downturn.
The African Young Positives Network (AY+) which is a regional Network for young people living with HIV across Africa. Launched at the International Conference of AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) 2011 held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, AY+ exists to mobilize and capacitate community, national and sub-regional groups of young people living with HIV to advocate for services that meet their needs including their social, health, education and wellbeing. The SRHR Africa Trust (SAT) hosts and builds capacity of the Y+ network in South Africa (SA) and sponsored supported positive adolescents participation in ICASA 2017.
Key messages emerging from ICASA 2017 include; 1)Continued efforts and sustainability 2) youth leadership and focus is critical to addressing pressing HIV issues on the continent.
